First up what a great effort from Ritchie Resnais and his U/18's in their first game of the year. A win like that gives a lot of confidence and will attract more players.

 

On to Saturday and all three teams had a fight on their hands with the B's and C's going down by a couple of goals to very fired up Athelstone Club wanting 3 wins.

 

The A grade fought it out all day playing some really good footy against a team matching our work rate and intensity. Our backline was again very solid lead by Jake Scharenberg and Casey Beard. Tom Underwood was on top of a very good player and the lads were working well together.

 

Up forward all players were having bits and pieces of good footy and Sam Underwood was accumulating a few with good leading and strength.

 

In the mids, Ruwy, Rama, Ritchie O and Josh Bayliss were working really hard and the wingman in Sopes and Liam Jacka were on top with their use of the footy a stand out.

 

Clearly everybody was contributing and enter the last quarter we pushed out a 4 goal win. Orry Cross being excellent in ruck, the Underwood boys very good with Sam winning the ANZAC medal, a great honour and Ruwy, Sopes and Josh Bayliss good as well. Nick Ramsey finished with 3 goals in another top game and Shaz was superb at half back.

 

A good win against a good side.

 

There were two things great for our footy club. Firstly the opportunity to watch the over 35's Saturday night and have the guys around. Their support to us is very much appreciated.

 

Also the effort of Peter Arbery on the bugle to give the over 35's a realistic Last Post. It was fantastic and although a couple of notes were not perfect it just does not matter. Well done Pete!

We got off to a solid start on Saturday in the B grade against Athelstone with some good ball movement and attack on the ball in the first quarter.

 

The second quarter saw us in an arm wrestle against a determined opponent who broke it open for around 10 minutes scoring three goals in that time with no reply which gave them the lead going in at half time.

​

Our second half saw Athelstone stretch their lead out to a few goals but to our boys credit, they never gave up and fought hard to get to within a goal with a couple of minutes to go but couldn't quite wrestle the lead back and ended up going down by 15 points.

​

Goal kickers were Jack Loades with 3 and singles to Leatchy, Declan Grant, Dean Bonnici, Eo and Brent Eddy.

​

Josh James was our best player after shutting one of their dangerous forwards down and getting plenty of the footy himself while Ben Toohey was great in the ruck giving us good use of the ball around the stoppages and Rian Morgan controlled his wing for most of the day. Dean Bonnici gave us good drive in the backline and held down the ruck when Tooza needed a rest and Fletty gave us plenty of leadership around the field while playing forward and wing.

​

Our ability to play as a team for four quarters has been questioned against quality sides and we now need to ensure we focus on what needs to be done to turn our form around, starting with Pembroke on this week.

​

Well done to Simon's A Grade in the Div 2 ANZAC game and Ritchie and his Under 18s in their first game first win last Sunday.

On Saturday we faced a formidable opponent in Athlestone. From previous encounters we knew that they setup well around the ground and employed a full ground press allowing them to control the game once the ball is inside their forward 50.

 

A top of the table clash as you might add, with both sides sitting 2-0. Unfortunately we weren't able to get the chocolates eventually going down by 21 points but I have to admire the fight by our boys when it looked as though things could go the other way. With 5 minutes to play in the third quarter we were 22 points down, a tipping point of sorts with the game balanced to head down two paths; a fightback or a blowout. Our lads took the bit between their teeth kicking the next four goals either side of 3qtr time to put our nose in front. From that point on though we ran out of legs and with athlestone kicking two goals in the last 3 minutes the scoreboard didn't show how close the game was.

 

Best on ground was young Brian Cheung, he repeatedly disregarded his own safety to win contested footy, time and time again putting his head over the footy to win crucial hard balls. Hamish flentje was the general down back and had his hands full with the athlestone forward line stacked with some older bigger and wiser footy heads. He battled wilfully and led the way, well supported by Deej and Gilby. Sammy Meyers was once again his elusive self around the contest, consistently creating space for himself and others, while Dave parkins straightened us up and almost won the game off his own boot when moved to full forward. Congrats to josh Clark on his first game for the club.

 

The wheels are in motion and now we know the standard we have to get to on the way to becoming a top 3 team this season! Well done to quinny's Agrade and keep working hard to the Bs, reward for effort will come. Pembroke @ home at 2:15 this week, for some phantom redemption!

u/18 Ritchies Post Match Report

We looked forward to our first game of the season away to Kennilworth  but didn’t know what to expect in way of  players that where available , thanks to a lot of hard work by Anthony Booth and Caroline Porter during the week we had 18 at the start of the game.

 

We emphasized before the game the way we wanted to play, by moving the ball quickly by hand and foot and  decision making was of utmost importance whether with ball in hand or running and creating, importantly we wanted the boys to enjoy themselves out there as well. The run, carry and delivery by all players was fantastic creating a lot of problems for the opposition. We were pleased that the boys didn’t become complacent as the game went on, they just kept working hard. It was a great effort by all especially as this was the first time some of the boys had played alongside each other and  we also haven’t trained as a group together, A great team effort by all.

​

Congrats to Chase Meuris & Jesse Smith (sturt u/18s) on playing there 1st u/18 Phantoms game, hope to see you play many more.

​

Thanks to all the u/16s players that helped us fill the side, Deano, Toosa from the seniors & Tom Gulliford from Westies who all played 2 games on the weekend..without you the other boys wouldnt of got game..brilliant stuff.

​

Dont forget posibly our only standalone training session this friday 530pm followed by Pizzas.

A Grade Prematch

​

After a week off for Easter I think we are all very keen for Saturday. Athelstone come down in good form and have made their presence felt in A2 already and would be eyeing a win against us right off. 

 

We host the ANZAC day Division 2 game so this adds a special touch to the weekend with the best player awarded an ANZAC day medal. 

 

We lose Sam Inglis due to study commitments, Brent Eddy goes back to the two's for a good dose of footy and coming in are Sam Williams and Luke May. 

 

A really big game for us and the way the lads trained last night suggests we will be ready. 

 

A big well done to Nick Ramsey on reaching 50 games. It's not been a quick or easy road for him due to some severe injuries but his professionalism and drive have got him there along with a great ability to play the game. Well done Rama. 

 

I'd like to wish all PHOS teams all the best for the weekend and to Craig and Sam keep up the good work.

B Grade as follows,

 

 

This week we tackle Athelstone who are flying in the twos, winning their first two games convincingly. This means we have a tough challenge to play the game on our terms on Saturday at home.

​

Sticking to our structures, every player knowing their role and playing that role are the keys to helping us get the win on Saturday.

We have James Phillips coming in for his first B Grade game for the club while Jake Resnais gets his chance after showing good form in the C's and Brent Eddy will have a point to prove after coming down from the A's this week.

​

Good luck to all grades this week in tough games against quality opponents, I'm confident we can come away with three wins to celebrate the ANZAC weekend.
