Quinnys Post Match report

Saturdays result was not what we set out for with Pembroke out playing us and got a deserved win. If we had a won we would've stolen it but credit to the boys for putting us in to a winning position. 

 

We will learn from it, address a couple of things that need to be and look forward to straightening it for Gaza this week. 

 

Best were Liam Jacks and Glen Soper controlling their wings with Daniel Hill (3 goals) giving us bite up forward. Sam Underwood (4goals) and and Harry Cumming worked hard all day. Orry Cross was dominant in the ruck and Ritch O'grady, Ruwy and Ram were winning the footy. Our defence led by Casey Beard and Harry Young were doing their best and maybe our upfield accountability would've helped them more. 

 

So yes disappointing but if we are a group I believe we are we will get better and stronger because of it. Well done to Luke May and Liam Toohey on responding to  going back in the best way. 

 

Well done to to the B's and C's on their wins and also the U/18's on their second win. Caught a bit of the U/16,s Friday night and they looked really good under Paul Pattersons guidance. Club moving well.

Craigs post match report 

​

Pembroke were up for a scrap last Saturday and were playing the game on their terms in the first half making for a very congested game and only allowing us to go in at half time with a 3 goal lead.

 

After discussing the situation at the main break we managed to wrestle control of the game from them and opened up the game by flicking the ball around and running hard through their press. Our forwards capitalised on the good work from up the ground, making the most of their opportunities and our back six worked very hard to keep Pembroke scoreless in the second half.

 

In the end it was a good team win and with plenty of contributors for the full 4 quarters, making it hard to narrow best players to just five.

​

Jack Loades and Declan Grant both kicked 4 goals each and were unlucky not to get in our best while the Toohey brothers, Liam and Ben both kicked 2 goals and Tom Ward and Luke May kicked singles.

​

Liam Toohey came back to us this week from the A grade and tore it up in the middle getting plenty of the ball around the stoppages and using it well in his best on ground performance while Ben Toohey gave us a good target up forward leading up, taking grabs and kicking a couple of goals. Brent Eddy got right in and under, Dane Laing did a job on a player that had a big influence early in the game and shut him down and Luke May showed his class by leading from the front and giving us plenty of bite around the packs.

​

We now have an opportunity to get our season back on track and get ahead of the ledger, but only if we work hard and play the team footy we showed we can play on the weekend, consistency is now the key!

​

Great work from the C Grade and Under 18s on the weekend and bad luck to the A’s in a heartbreaker, I know they will bounce back next week.

We got back to winning ways on Saturday as we faced Pembroke Old Scholars in a rare afternoon game for us.

 

After a disappointing loss last week to Athelstone, the boys bounced back with a solid four quarter effort. We got off to a good start with Tate Garnaut kicking the first goal barely a minute in, and after the first quarter we had the game fairly well in our grasp.

 

Our back half was brilliant, setting us up the entire day with their intercept marking and drive, and the mids battled all day to give us first use. We finished the game winners by 52 points, and some easy chances that should have been converted could have blown that margin past 10 goals.

 

It was hard to pick our best players this week, as every player on the team did what was asked of them before the game. Nick Watts was brilliant on the wing, the run and carry that he and Keegan McGuiness gave us was a real factor in our win. James Biagi, Matthew Blyth, Wiggles and Franga were dominant in defence, always providing a contest and more often than not beating their man. After a week off, Mitch Blight spent the week with us coming down from the B grade, and gave us a big body in the midfield that we had sorely missed last week. His game was superb, especially considering he spent the majority of the day going without a change.

 

Next week we’ve got Gaza at home, 10:15 start as usual, in what will be Colin Gilby’s 300th game for the club. He’s been a great clubman and we hope that as many Phantoms as possible are out to support the great man in reaching a milestone very few have achieved before him.

u/18 Ritchies & Boothys Post Match Report

 

A good win by the boys but in no way easy, we started the game with 21 players which was good as we could continually rotate players through the bench who were playing on the ball.

 

We also had a player that hadn’t played in awhile because of other sporting commitments in Kyle Chalmers playing alongside his brother Jackson (u16s), which was a great influence on all the boys when walking into the change rooms before the game. Also great to have Nick Crouch (u16s) play for the 1st time with his brother Jimmy (see picture) of all 4 brothers.

 

We had a lot of talented players in our team but Edwardstown in the first quarter and a half where playing better team football, we lost our way for awhile in the first half which we addressed at half time. The third quarter the boys played as a team which showed also on the scoreboard, their hard work and great team work was paying off.

 

Leading into the last we continued to play the way we wanted to and finished off the game well, another good team effort by all.

 

We thought over 4 quarters Tyler Irvine in ruck was very good & Jessie Smith at CHB  took countless intercept marks to repel Townies on the attack. Sam McCabes 4 goals at CHF were gold when the game was on the line & Soli Brown was very solid. Thanks to the seniors players Deano, Toosa, Dec & Chungy (& GFC's  u/16s Jacko & NIcko) for 'buttering up' after Satudays games all played very very well and showed good leadership for the younger players.  We didnt have any passengers and great to again raise the 'all played well flag'.

 

The Phantoms song was sung with much passion and good to see another couple of new players to this team in the middle of the huddle.

 

Well done boys hope to see you all next week for our game against Rosies.

Quinnys Pre Match report 

​

We head to Pembroke for what should be a good game Saturday.  Pembroke coming up from A3 would be keen to notch another win. In saying that we look forward to the challenge.

 

Our start to the year has been solid with some areas to we are working hard to improve in. The work on the track has been first class this week and nobody is taking anything for granted.

 

Luke May and Liam Toohey go back to the two's this week after both playing well at A grade level. Coming in are Sam Inglis and Aaron Bergsma. Very tough decisions but exactly what we want as a group to keep us all working hard to get better.

 

All the best to Sam and the C's and Craig and the B's as I'm sure both teams are keen to bounce back with wins.

 

Also all the best to our u/18s on Sunday & our Junior teams kicking off this week.

B Grade

Getting back on the winners list on Saturday against Pembroke OC is our goal which will be tough on their home ground.

​

The focus this week has been the concept doing what’s best for your team regardless of where you are on the field and whether you’re in the play or not, there’s always something you can contribute. Buy in from all players in our squad will get us back in the form we need to play good footy every week.

​

Mitch Molnar comes back into our side after having a week off and Liam Toohey and Luke May come back from the A Grade and will be handy additions to our midfield.

​

A team effort is what’s needed and I’m sure the boys are ready to deliver!!
